What is America's Promise Alliance?

Founded in 1997 with General Colin Powell as Chairman and chaired today by Alma Powell, America's Promise Alliance is a cross-sector partnership of more than 300 corporations, nonprofits, faith-based organizations and advocacy groups that are passionate about improving lives and changing outcomes for children. Their work involves raising awareness, encouraging action and engaging in advocacy to provide children the key supports they call the Five Promises: Caring Adults, Safe Places, A Healthy Start, An Effective Education and Opportunities to Help Others.

What is the Illinois Youth Dropout Prevention Summit?

Students from around the state of Illinois will gather at a one day summit to address the high school dropout epidemic. The Illinois State Board of Education's Student Advisory Council is leading planning efforts for the summit and will lead the day's discussions. The day will evolve from a focus on the five promises that America's Promise believes are developmental resources that young people need to succeed in life. This youth-led summit precedes an adult statewide dropout prevention summit that will take place in November as one of the fifty America's Promise summits being held. The perspectives students provide as reasons for the dropout crisis in their schools will be shared with educators, administrators, and business and community leaders at the adult summit.

Who can participate in this summit?

High-school aged youth are being sought from all geographic locations of the state. High school aged youth need not be enrolled in school. Perspectives from all demographics and academic backgrounds are needed to solve the dropout crisis in Illinois and America. This summit will be designed for youth and separate sessions will take place for any accompanying adults.

What do I need to do to participate?

State Farm® and America's Promise are working together to sponsor a statewide dropout prevention summit in each state by 2010. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on October 12th to participants. Transportation and travel expenses are the responsibility of participants and their respective organizations. All participants can register at: http://www.sfamericaspromise.com/summits-il.php

Why does State Farm support educational efforts?

State Farm actively supports efforts to ensure all children have access to a quality education that will allow them to achieve their greatest potential, preparing them to be active participants in a nation that continues to be a global leader.

What is the ISBE SAC?

The Student Advisory Council (SAC) was originally formed in 1975 to bring student concerns to the attention of the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). The students who comprise the SAC are diverse and come from different geographic locations, ethnic backgrounds, and types of schools. However, they possess similar qualities, which include a strong work ethic, the ability to think “outside-the-box,” a willingness to set aside time from their busy schedules for SAC work and the skill of working well in groups.
